Southern Corsica has some of the finest beaches in the Mediterranean — powder-fine sand, translucent water, umbrella pines and pink granite. Palombaggia · Porto-Vecchio

Palombaggia, the icon

A mile and a half of powder-fine sand, water shifting from turquoise to deep blue, century-old umbrella pines running almost down to the sea. Behind it, the Cerbicale islands set their granite outlines on the horizon. It is the most photographed beach in Corsica — and there is a reason for that.

Several good beach restaurants (Playa Baggia, Tamaricciu, Le Petit Chose) make it easy to stay all day. Paid parking throughout (€7–10); arrive before 10 a.m. in July and August.

Arrive before 10.30 a.m. in summer. The southern end, towards Tamariccio, is quieter than the middle of the bay.

Santa Giulia · Porto-Vecchio

Santa Giulia, the lagoon

A horseshoe bay, almost enclosed, with milky turquoise water over a white sand bottom that shelves gently for tens of metres. La the family beach par excellence — walk fifty metres out and the water is still at your knees.

Ideal in the afternoon for watersports (paddleboarding, kayaking, windsurfing).

Rondinara · Bonifacio

Rondinara, the perfect bay

A perfectly circular bay, translucent water, a protected setting. Between Porto-Vecchio and Bonifacio, in a picture-book landscape. Less known than Palombaggia, often more beautiful, always more intimate. It is our favourite beach for children — the water stays shallow for tens of metres.

A single beach restaurant, paid parking in summer (€6–8), and a 10-minute walk around the headland to see the whole bay from above. Combine it with the Rondinara walk.

Arrive before 10 a.m. in July and August — the bay fills up fast. Bring a mask and snorkel.

Tamariccio · Porto-Vecchio

Tamariccio, the intimate neighbour

Immediately south of Palombaggia, Tamariccio shares the same extraordinary water on a smaller scale. Shorter, framed by pink granite rocks and the tamarisk trees that give it its name. It feels like a private cove, sheltered from the world.

The Tamaricciu beach restaurant is one of the best lunch spots on this coast.

Petit Sperone · Bonifacio

Petit Sperone

On the edge of Bonifacio, a fifteen-minute walk from the Sperone golf course car park brings you to a wild beach of fine sand, set among white granite and translucent water. No facilities, no restaurant. For anyone looking to genuinely switch off.

Bring water, a picnic, a parasol and a snorkel: there is nothing there.

Balistra · Bonifacio (nord)

Balistra, the long wild one

North of Bonifacio, Balistra runs for more than a kilometre, backed by a lagoon and fronted by hills. Barely developed, reached by a track off the main road. It is the longest wild beach in the south, and a favourite with kitesurfers when the wind blows.

One beach restaurant lets you have lunch facing the sea, but the atmosphere stays unspoilt because so few people come. Free parking on arrival.

The access track is bumpy — nothing serious, but easier in an SUV. A perfect day out if you want quiet and space.

Ventilegna · Figari

Baie de Figari & Ventilegna

The closest to the villas — just fifteen minutes. The bay of Figari begins at Saline Sottane, with its large granite boulders sculpted by the wind and the inland mountains behind. Further on, the Punta di Ventilegna hides small coves reached by the customs officers' path.

Wild in feel, with no facilities. It is our fallback beach when everywhere else is packed — and we often have it to ourselves.

Chevanu · Pianottoli-Caldarello

Anse de Chevanu

A broad cove of pale sand west of Pianottoli, within the Bouches de Bonifacio nature reserve. Turquoise water, a wild feel, and few people even at the height of the season. It is the starting point for the Bruzzi path.

Roccapina
Roccapina · Sartène

Roccapina, the stone lion

Towards Sartène, a wide beach of russet sand overlooked by a rock formation shaped like a lying lion — the famous Lion of Roccapina. Swimming in turquoise water, dunes, no beach restaurant. A view across to Sardinia on a clear day.

Ideal when Palombaggia is packed. A little windy — which is exactly what you want in the heat.

Parking

The large beaches (Palombaggia, Santa Giulia, Rondinara) have car parks that are paid in summer (€6–10 a day). Bring change and arrive early.

Best times

Before 10.30 a.m. or after 5 p.m. in July and August. In between, the beaches are full and so are the car parks. Outside those two months, any time is fine.

Safety

Many beaches are unsupervised. Check the flags before swimming. Watch for currents near Bonifacio in a westerly wind.

Shade

Few beaches offer natural shade (Palombaggia and its pines are the exception). Bring a parasol or a beach tent for children and long days.
